Flanker Drive out of Near Y Left Slot (21 personnel) is a classic Cover 4 beater built around the deep crossing drive concept. The Y (tight end) runs a deep drive route across the middle of the field, sitting down over the ball in the void behind linebackers and in front of deep safeties, while the flanker and slot receiver clear out with vertical routes to stretch the corners and safeties downfield. Underneath, a backfield receiver runs a shallow drag/flat route to hold linebackers and give the quarterback a check down against pressure. The primary read starts with the deep drive route working from the backside in, then progresses to the vertical shots outside if the middle is clogged, and finally checks down to the flat route underneath.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify two deep safeties and off man or zone corners, this is the shell most vulnerable to the drive concept because the middle of the field is naturally open behind the linebackers. Watch the middle linebacker's initial drop, if he sinks too deep or bites on the flat route, the drive runner will cross into a wide open throwing lane. Key the corners on the vertical routes, if they stay flat footed or bail late off the snap it signals zone coverage and confirms the drive window will be there. Against man coverage, look for the nickel or linebacker matched on the drive runner to trail closely, a tight trail technique means you should speed up the route or check to the flat instead of forcing the crosser. Beware of Cover 3 sky or a robber safety sitting in the intermediate middle, that defender is disguised specifically to jump the drive route and can turn this into a pick six if the quarterback stares it down too long.
Usage Tips
Call this on second and long or third and medium when you expect zone coverage, since the drive route thrives in the soft spot of Cover 4 and Cover 2 shells. Pre-snap, check for two deep safeties split wide and off corners, that alignment tells you the middle drive route will have room to sit down for an easy completion. If you see man coverage instead, hot route the drive runner into a deeper crossing route or speed up his break to create separation before the underneath defenders can react. Use the flat route as your answer versus blitz looks, it is a quick, safe outlet that punishes teams bringing extra rushers. Pair this play with Post Drag or Slants earlier in a series so the defense starts respecting the shallow crossers, then hit them with Flanker Drive when they sit on those shorter routes and open up the deep middle void.
