Onside Kick

Kickoff·Nfl Onside Kick·Personnel not specified

Breakdown

Onside Kick is a special teams play out of the Kickoff formation designed to recover an intentionally short kick and regain possession instead of ceding the ball to the opponent. There is no route concept or blocking scheme here since it is not an offensive play, but the kicker aims to pooch the ball just past the required ten yard mark so your hands team can pounce on it before the receiving team secures possession. The primary read is not a progression through routes but a visual read on ball placement and hang time, timing your pursuit to arrive the instant the ball becomes live.

Defensive Reads

If you are on the receiving end, get your best hands catchers on the field the instant you see the offense show an unbalanced onside look pre-snap, since the kicking team formation will bunch to one side of the ball. Watch the kicker's approach angle right before the boot, a shorter run up combined with a low dip usually signals the ball will be kicked lower and to a corner instead of a deep high kick. Have at least two players spread just past the ten yard restraining line so you have numbers to the ball once it becomes live, since a cluster of only one or two defenders gets outleveraged by the kicking team's hands unit. User your most sure handed player and have him track the ball in the air rather than the crowd of bodies, since focusing on the ball avoids getting boxed out at the moment of the bounce. If the opponent has shown onside kicks before in the game, anticipate it anytime they trail by more than one score inside the final two minutes, since that down and distance and score situation is the clearest tell for the play call.

Usage Tips

Only call this play when you desperately need possession, such as trailing late in the fourth quarter or in overtime scenarios where a stop will not be enough.

Check the opponent's return alignment before the snap since a spread out hands team on defense signals they expect the onside attempt and will crash forward immediately.

Manually control your best ball skills player near the point of impact so you can react to the bounce instead of relying on CPU teammates to make the recovery.

Aim the kick toward a seam between two receiving team players rather than directly at a defender's chest, since a mishit at a body invites an easy fair catch or clean fielding.

Never spam this play back to back in franchise or ranked seasons since a smart opponent will stack extra hands team personnel once they see the tendency, so mix in a normal kickoff first to keep them honest.
