Breakdown

HB Stretch out of I Form Y Off with 21 personnel is an outside zone run play designed to get the HB moving laterally before deciding where to cut upfield. The offensive line and FB flow horizontally to seal the edge, giving the runner a track to press the perimeter and read blocks from the outside in. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression is the backside cutback lane first, then the frontside edge if the defense overpursues.

Defensive Reads

Watch for stacked box alignments with linebackers creeping to the line, this signals a run blitz that can blow up the stretch before it develops. Outside linebackers and defensive ends that stay wide and refuse to crash are the biggest threat, they force the cutback read every time. Zone defenses with slow flowing linebackers get gashed by this play because the stretch action pulls them out of their gaps. Man coverage on the backside with a single high safety leaves the cutback lane exposed, look for the safety to cheat down as a run support key. User controlled defenders spying the mesh point or crashing down hard off the snap are baiting the cutback, stay patient and trust the frontside if you see this.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run HB Stretch into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box.

Use the FB lead block as your visual key, if he climbs to the second level clean, plant and cut off his hip.

Pair this play with Inside Zone from the same Y Off set to keep linebackers honest and prevent them from flowing hard to the edge on every snap.

Best called on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when the defense has not committed extra defenders to the run.

If the defense shows a fast flowing linebacker crew, hot route the FB to cut block instead of lead to slow down edge defenders shooting gaps.
