95 Mike is a downhill Iso run out of I Form Y Off with 21 personnel, putting two backs stacked behind the QB and a TE attached for extra beef on the line. The lead back isolates on the playside linebacker while the fullback leads through the hole to seal the alley, and the offensive line steps down with power blocking to create a vertical crease at the point of attack. This is a straight gap run play with no play-action or RPO element, so the primary read is simple: follow the fullback's lead block and press the hole, bouncing outside only if the ISO linebacker is walled off inside.
Defensive Reads
Watch for stacked fronts with the MIKE linebacker sitting tight behind the nose, this alignment is designed to plug the Iso hole and can stuff this run for a loss. Key the fullback's release. If the user defender flows too fast to meet the lead block, the runner can cut back against the grain for a bigger gain. Man coverage shells with press corners on the outside tend to leave extra bodies in the box, making this a tougher matchup, look for single high safety looks (Cover 1 or Cover 3) as a green light to run. Watch for blitzing linebackers stunting through the A or B gap pre-snap, a delayed mesh point with the fullback can get eaten up if the blitz times up with the snap count. If the defense shows a light box with a safety rotated out of the run fit (common against Cover 2 shells), this is a strong indicator the ISO lane will be there for a positive gain.
Usage Tips
Use 95 Mike on early downs when you want to establish tempo and force the defense to respect the run before you dial up play-action shots from the same Y Off set.
Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has stacked eight or more in the box, this is not the play, bounce to Inside Zone or HB Stretch instead for better numbers.
Identify the MIKE linebacker's alignment before the snap. If he is cheating outside the tackle box, user the fullback to adjust his aim point and seal him inside.
Pair 95 Mike with PA X Dig or PA Cross out of the same formation and personnel to keep linebackers honest and hold them in run fits, opening up the play-action passing game.
On short yardage or goal line situations, this play shines because of the extra gap protection from the 21 personnel grouping, so call it on 3rd and short or inside the 5 yard line.
