PA Cross out of I Form Y Off (21 personnel) sells the run fake with the fullback and offensive line stepping into run action before the QB pulls and rolls into the pocket. The backside X receiver runs a deep crossing route all the way across the field while the TE releases underneath into a shallow drag on the other side of the formation, and the flanker on the right runs a deep comeback breaking back to the sideline. This is a play-action man beater built to attack aggressive linebackers and safeties who bite on the run fake, with the deep crosser as the primary read against man coverage and the comeback as a zone beater vs cornerbacks sitting in flat zones.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth at the snap since shallow linebackers biting on the run fake open a clean throwing lane for the deep crosser. Key the flanker's defender pre-snap: if the cornerback is playing off with outside leverage the comeback route has an easy window against zone coverage. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender dropping into a lurk or spy position in the middle of the field since that defender can undercut the crosser as it works across the formation. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the deep crosser separating on its break. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined linebackers sitting in shallow zones and safeties staying deep can take away both the crosser and the comeback, forcing a check down to the fullback or TE drag underneath.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs when you have already established Inside Zone or HB Stretch to get linebackers flowing downhill on the run fake. Check pre-snap for single high safety looks since the deep crosser has room to work against man coverage underneath a lone deep defender. If the defense shows two high safeties, hot route the TE drag into a deeper option or peek at the comeback route sooner since the crosser may run into a safety rotating over the top. Use this play on second and medium or third and long after running Inside Zone a few times to keep linebackers honest on the play fake. Pair this with Quick Slants or PA X Dig in the same set so the defense cannot key on your run action tendencies.
