HB Stretch out of Wing Over I Form is a zone blocking run play that sends the offensive line flowing laterally toward the play side while the HB reads the edge before deciding to bounce outside, bend to the cutback lane, or press vertically through a crease. It is not a man or zone beater in the passing sense since it is a pure run concept, but it is designed to attack fast flow defenses and gap exchanges by stretching the defensive front horizontally. The primary read progression for the HB starts with the play side edge defender (crash or contain), moves to the play side linebacker fill, and finishes with the backside cutback lane if the front over pursues.
Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they crash hard down the line immediately, bounce the run outside for a big gain since the zone scheme is designed to pull blockers to the second level. Check linebacker alignment depth before the snap, backers sitting tight to the line usually signal an aggressive run blitz or gap exchange scheme that can blow up the stretch if not adjusted. Post-snap, key the backside pursuit linebacker, if he overruns the play chasing the stretch flow, cut the HB back against the grain for a explosive cutback run. Look for safeties rotating down into the box pre-snap, this indicates the defense is selling out to stop the run and you should consider audibling to a play action concept in the set instead. Identify user-controlled defenders lurking in the backfield, since aggressive human players often shoot gaps early trying to blow up the stretch timing, and patience from the HB can turn that aggression into a home run cutback.
Pre-snap, check the box count and look for a heavy box with eight or more defenders since that signals a run blitz that can be countered by motioning out of this look into PA Waggle or PA Boot Flow later in the drive.
Identify linebacker depth before the snap, if the backers are sitting shallow and crashing hard to the play side call, hot route the FB or use manual motion to widen the edge defender and open the cutback lane.
Use HB Stretch early in a series to set up PA Mtn Power O and PA Boot Flow, since both plays sell the same lateral zone flow before breaking off play action, forcing linebackers to hesitate on future run reads.
On second and short or first and ten, this is a premium call because it forces defenders to declare gap responsibility, and if you see them flow too fast you can cut it back for explosive gains.
Avoid calling this into stacked fronts with safeties crashed into the box pre-snap, since the numbers advantage disappears and the defense can gap exchange to blow up the stretch before the HB commits.
