Mlb Gap A

Goal Line Defense·5-3·Personnel not specified

Breakdown

Mlb Gap A is a run stop defensive play out of the 5-3 Goal Line Defense formation, built to plug the interior A gaps on short yardage and goal line situations. The diagram shows all five down linemen and both inside linebackers firing downhill through the A and B gaps at the snap, with the Mlb crashing hard into the middle of the line to seal the gap before the running back can hit the hole. This is a pure run stop play with no coverage drops shown, designed to stack the box and blow up dive and iso runs before they develop.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the offense is in a heavy run formation like goal line or jumbo packages, which confirms this play is scheme sound against inside runs. Watch the offensive line splits and fullback alignment, tight splits and a lead blocker usually mean a dive or iso play right into the A gap this play is designed to stop. Post-snap, key the Mlb and both defensive tackles firing into their gaps immediately, if they get sealed or double teamed the run can bounce outside where this play has no answer. This play gets exposed badly by play action out of goal line personnel or any pass concept since there are no underneath coverage droppers, so if the offense shows pass shifts or motion late, expect to get burned. It also loses to outside zone runs and stretch plays that flow away from the crashing linebackers, so watch for tackles and guards pulling laterally which signals you should have called an edge contain play instead.

Usage Tips

Call this on short yardage and goal line run downs, especially 3rd or 4th and 1 when the offense is likely to run a QB sneak, dive, or iso play. Pre-snap, check the offensive formation for heavy sets or extra tight ends, which signal a between the tackles run and confirm this is the right call. User the Mlb and manually crash him into the A gap immediately at the snap to beat blockers before they can climb to the second level. Pair this with Gaps B or Gaps A B in the same set to keep the offense guessing about which gap you are overloading, then mix in Gl Man on passing downs near the goal line to cover play action. Avoid calling this against shotgun spread or empty formations since the defense will be badly outnumbered on the perimeter and vulnerable to quick passes or outside runs.
