Gaps A B is a run-stop assignment play out of the 5-3 Goal Line Defense, built to plug the interior gaps on short-yardage and goal-to-go situations. The diagram shows all five down linemen and the three linebackers flowing straight downhill through the A and B gaps, with the middle linebacker crashing hardest through the A gap while the linebackers on either side fill the B gaps. This is not a coverage beater at all, it is a gap-integrity run defense with no zone drops or man assignments shown, so the primary read is simply gap discipline: stuff the dive or lead run before it develops and trust your fits rather than reading routes.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, confirm the offense is in a heavy or goal-line run personnel package, since this call has zero answers if they spread you out and throw quick screens or bootlegs. Watch the fullback or lead blocker alignment, if he is stacked behind the guard expect a dive or lead draw directly into the A or B gap fits shown in the diagram. Post-snap, key the guards, if they pull or fire out flat it signals gap or power schemes that this play is designed to blow up by crashing linebackers downhill immediately. This call gets exposed by play-action or misdirection since every defender shown is flowing forward with no eye discipline for a fake, so watch for RPO tags or naked bootlegs off similar run looks. If the offense shows an unbalanced or trips look pre-snap, expect the play to bounce outside the shown gap fits, in which case you want to have already checked to Gaps All LB or Gl Man.
Usage Tips
Use this play almost exclusively on third or fourth and short, or when the offense is backed up near the goal line, since it sacrifices coverage integrity for numbers in the box.
Pre-snap, check the offensive personnel and formation width. If the offense trots out extra receivers or spreads the formation, consider audibling to Gl Man or Gaps All LB instead since this call is a pure run stuffer.
Do not user the middle linebacker into a coverage drop, keep him attacking the A gap immediately at the snap to blow up dive concepts and QB sneaks.
Mix this call with Mlb Gap A when you want a slightly more conservative single-gap crash from the mike while keeping outside linebackers more flexible against misdirection.
Sequence this play early in short-yardage series to bait the offense into thinking you are always crashing the interior, then switch to Gaps All on the next snap to expand run fits and catch cutback lanes.
