Overview
The Normal set in the Full House formation is a throwback three-back look built from 21 personnel. The quarterback is under center with the halfback aligned deep and two up-backs (the fullback and the tight end working as an H-back) flanking him in a T-style backfield, while both wide receivers split out wide. Unlike standard I-Form or Singleback sets where the tight end attaches to the line, this set pulls the tight end into the backfield. That hides his assignment until the snap and gives the defense three potential ball carriers or lead blockers to account for on every play.
Because the alignment is symmetrical, the defense gets no strength tell from the backfield. Linebackers have to stay square and honor both the front side and the backside, which is exactly what the Counter Lead exploits. The misdirection step pulls second-level defenders the wrong way while an up-back leads through the hole. The two wide receivers stay isolated on the outside against corners with little safety help, since the box is loaded to stop the run.
The Gadget tag fits because the set lives on deception rather than volume. PA Ctr Waggle sells the same counter action, then boots the quarterback away from the flow with a backfield player leaking into the flat and the receivers running a high-low stretch. Against defenses that bring an eighth defender down to stop the power look, this play-action creates easy completions to the leaking back and deep shots to the isolated receivers.
Strengths
- The symmetrical three-back alignment hides run strength pre-snap, so defenders cannot cheat their gap fits or shade blitzes to one side before the snap
- Counter Lead punishes aggressive linebackers and users who crash on the first backfield step, because the counter action and lead blocker hit the vacated gap
- PA Ctr Waggle uses the exact same backfield action as Counter Lead, which freezes Cover 3 and Cover 1 hook defenders and opens the flat for the leaking back
- With the box loaded, both outside receivers draw one-on-one matchups, making a streak or post hot route a strong man beater against Cover 0 and Cover 1
- The waggle rollout moves the launch point away from backside pressure and gives the quarterback a simple high-low read on the flat defender against Cover 2 and Cover 3
Weaknesses
- The set contains only two plays, so opponents can label and key your tendencies quickly and sit on the counter or the waggle
- A disciplined user on the backside edge or a spy on the quarterback can blow up the waggle rollout before the throw develops
- Overloaded edge blitzes from the waggle side leave the quarterback exposed with no hot read available, because the backs are committed to play-action fakes
- Only two receivers go out immediately on passing downs, so Cover 2 Man and Cover 4 bracket looks can erase the outside targets
- Defenses that pinch the defensive line and bring a safety into the box remove the counter cutback lane without giving up much against the limited passing game
Usage Tips
Run Counter Lead on early downs against Nickel and Dime personnel, where lighter boxes cannot match your three backs at the point of attack
When you see a safety rotate down or linebackers flowing fast to the first step, audible to PA Ctr Waggle to punish the overcommitment
Hot route the backside receiver to a streak or post against Cover 0 and Cover 1 looks, since the box is loaded and the corner has no safety help
On the waggle, read the flat defender first: if he jumps the leaking back, hit the intermediate crosser, and if he sinks, dump it to the flat for yards after the catch
Use this set as a change-up in short yardage and red zone situations instead of a base package, since its thin play count will get scouted if you call it every series
