PA Ctr Waggle is a play-action pass built off the counter run look out of Full House 21 personnel, designed to freeze linebackers with the fake handoff before the quarterback rolls out to the waggle side. The blocking scheme sells counter action with the fullback and offensive line, then releases the tight end and a running back into the flat and intermediate zones while a receiver works a deep crossing or comeback route to attack vacated space. This is a zone beater at its core since the play-action freeze and rollout naturally exploit zone defenders who bite on the run fake or overcommit to flow, and the primary read progression starts with the flat route off the play fake, moves to the crossing route in the intermediate area, and finishes with any deep shot if the safety bites down.
Watch for linebackers stepping up hard on the counter fake, since that confirms the defense is playing zone coverage and the flat and crossing routes will have room underneath. Identify single high safety shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1 pre snap, as these are vulnerable to the crossing route sitting in the void behind linebackers who bite on the fake. Look for a user controlled linebacker sitting in a lurk position over the middle, since that defender can jump the intermediate crosser and blow up the second read if he stays disciplined. Recognize Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with safeties staying deep and split, which limits big plays over the top but still leaves the flat route open against the play fake if corners squat in the deep third. Key on edge blitzes or contain rushers crashing the waggle side, since a disciplined edge defender who stays home on the quarterback rollout can force a bad throw or a scramble before routes develop.
Run this play on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage so the counter fake actually holds linebackers and safeties who are keying run tendencies.
Check the defensive alignment pre snap for stacked box counts or safeties creeping into run support, since that tells you the play fake will draw extra attention and open the waggle flat and crossing routes.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or speed out if you see man coverage on the outside, since the base concept leans zone beater and needs an adjustment against press or man shells.
Pair this play with Counter Lead earlier in a series so the defense keys run action off tendency, then hit them with PA Ctr Waggle once they start crashing linebackers downhill.
Roll the quarterback fully outside the pocket on the waggle action to buy extra time against interior pressure, then work the flat to intermediate crosser progression before considering any risky throw across the field.
