Breakdown
Smash Swing out of the Far Slot formation is a classic Cover 2 beater built on flooding one side of the field with three distinct route depths. The backside receiver runs a deep corner route while the outside receiver to the trips side runs a vertical seam, the slot receiver runs an out and up (sit and go) into the flat, and the back releases on a swing route underneath. The blocking assignment on the corner route side shows a quick out breaking route from the running back, giving you a high low read against zone coverage. This is a true zone beater, and the primary progression starts with the corner route against the deep half safety, works down to the seam sitting behind the linebackers, and finishes with the swing as a check down against blitz or man leverage.
Defensive Reads
Presnap check safety depth, if both safeties are at 10 to 12 yards showing two high shell this play should hit clean off the corner or seam read. Watch the flat defender and outside cornerback leverage, if the corner sinks deep and the flat defender widens late this creates the window for the seam route behind them. Post snap key the middle linebacker drop, if he sprints to the deep middle in a Tampa 2 look the swing route becomes the checkdown of choice since the underneath area gets crowded. This play struggles against man coverage with a deep safety showing single high, especially if the defense brings a corner blitz or nano blitz off the edge since the protection has to hold up for a longer developing corner route. If you see Cover 3 with a hard rotating strong safety, expect the corner route to be contested, switch your eyes immediately to the swing route for a safer completion against underneath zone defenders sprinting to contain the run.
Usage Tips
Presnap identify if the safeties are showing two high, since this play is designed to attack the deep quarter or deep half voids that Cover 2 and Cover 4 leave in the flat and seam areas.
If the corner over the trips side is playing hard outside leverage, hot route the slot receiver into a quicker option route to settle underneath the zone drop.
Use this play on early downs like first or second and medium when defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells rather than bring pressure.
Pair this with Curl Drag or Double Slant from the same set so the defense cannot key on the deep corner route tendency, this keeps linebackers honest and prevents them from sitting on the swing.
Against user controlled defenders lurking underneath, throw the corner route with anticipation before the safety can rotate over the top.
