Play diagram for Tampa 2 from Big Nickel Under in Madden 27

Not in any team playbook.

Breakdown

Tampa 2 out of the Under Big Nickel 4-2-5 shows the classic two deep half safeties bracketing the field while the Mike drops into a deep middle hole, the trademark rat in the hole technique that defines Tampa 2. The two outside corners sink into shallow curl/flat zones underneath the deep halves, and the DE/OLB types drop into short zones on each side of the Mike, forming a five under, two deep shell. Up front all four down linemen rush off the snap with no blitz shown, relying on a standard four man rush to hold up while the coverage rotates. This is a zone beater against man heavy concepts but its real purpose is closing the deep middle throw that regular Cover 2 gives up, so the primary read progression for the offense is to work the deep middle first, then check flat and curl routes underneath if the Mike's drop denies the post or dig.

Defensive Reads

Read the Mike linebacker's drop first, if he gets over the top of any deep crosser or post route immediately that route is dead, force the quarterback to his checkdown. Key the two deep safeties for any rotation post snap, if either safety cheats down into the box pre-snap you are vulnerable to a double move or seam route behind him. Watch the flat defenders' initial jump, this call is exploitable by fast developing curl/flat combos and quick outs since the corners are reading run/pass instead of jumping the flat immediately. This shell gets beaten badly by four verticals if the Mike is late getting to his landmark, so user the Mike manually in crunch time to guarantee he reaches the deep middle before the seam routes stretch him. Look for offenses stacking or bunching receivers to one side, that alignment is designed to overload one flat zone defender, so shade your underneath zone leverage toward the stronger side before the snap.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or second and medium when you expect play-action or a shot play up the seams, since the Mike's deep drop is designed to erase the exact throw those concepts attack.

Pre-snap, check for two high safeties and press or matched corners, that alignment tells you the offense may be sitting in man or Cover 2 beaters and Tampa 2 will bait the deep middle throw into a trap.

Hot route your flat defenders to squeeze wide receiver out routes and bubble screens if you see a heavy flat concept, since the base flat drop can be a step slow versus quick game.

Pair this call with Cover 2 Man and Cover 3 Match in the same set so the pre-snap look stays disguised, forcing the quarterback to guess whether the middle will be occupied by a linebacker or a true deep third safety.

Use Sam Blitz 2 or Safety Blitz as a change up after showing Tampa 2 a few times, since offenses that key on the Mike sinking deep will get caught off guard when you bring pressure instead.
