Hammer O Blast is a Safety Blitz out of the Under Big Nickel 4-2-5 look, and the diagram confirms it with four underneath defenders driving straight downhill on blitz paths while a fifth defender loops from depth to the edge for a contain rush. This is not a coverage shell play, it is a pressure package designed to overload the box with numbers while leaving minimal underneath help. With five or six rushers crashing the line and only shallow zone drops behind them, the primary read for the defense is simply getting bodies through gaps fastest, there is no coverage progression, the whole design is about winning up front before the quarback can get the ball out.
Pre-snap, confirm the offense is not aligned in a heavy run formation or with extra blockers, since Hammer O Blast overcommits bodies to the pass rush and can be gashed by inside runs or screens if the blocking numbers favor the offense. Watch for the running back staying in to chip or block, that is your first indicator the offense sensed pressure and is countering with a quick screen or draw. Key the offensive line splits and quarterback's eyes before the snap, wide splits or a spread bunch look often means a fast throw designed to beat exactly this kind of blitz. Post-snap, track the looping contain defender's leverage on any rollout or scramble, if he gets sealed inside the quarterback has a clean lane outside. If the offense audibles into empty backfield or no huddle tempo, be ready for a hot route beater like a quick slant or flat route that attacks the vacated shallow zone before your rush arrives.
Use this call on short to medium yardage downs like third and four or less when you expect the offense to sit in the pocket and throw a quick route combo. Diagnose pre-snap whether the offense is in shotgun spread with quick game concepts, since Hammer O Blast is vulnerable to hot routes and slot fades if the quarterback identifies the blitz and gets the ball out in under two seconds. Pair this call with Cover 1 Hole or Cover 1 FS Fire earlier in a series so the offense sees a similar Big Nickel alignment and cannot key the blitz off formation recognition alone. User the looping edge defender to manually contain scrambles or bootlegs, since the CPU AI on that rusher can be baited upfield by play-action. Save this for situations where you have a lead and want a splash negative play, since the aggressive gap shooting leaves you exposed to screens and draws if the offense checks into one.
