Cover 1 Slant Crash is a man coverage blitz look out of the Under set Big Nickel formation. The diagram shows four defensive linemen slanting hard to the play side with a stunt off the edge, one deep man matched off a receiver running vertical, and man defenders spread across the remaining receivers with two underneath defenders sitting inside. This is a man beater against the pass since the coverage is locked in one on one everywhere while the front generates pressure through the line slant and stunt, and the primary read progression starts with the deep vertical route as the first alert against any receiver who wins outside leverage before working down to the underdneath crossers if the quarterback holds the ball.
Key the running back release out of the backfield first since man coverage leaves your linebacker exposed if he is late picking up a check release into the flat Watch for quick game concepts like slants and hitches that attack the man defenders before the stunt off the line can get home This call struggles against pick or rub route concepts designed to create natural picks against man coverage, so be ready to sim call out of it if you see bunch or stack formations Identify the single high safety help post snap, if he bites on a shallow crosser you are vulnerable to a deep shot behind him Look for hot route audibles from the offense at the line, a sudden shift to max protect or extra blockers tells you they expect the stunt and are sitting on the blitz
Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to test man coverage with a vertical shot or a slot receiver working across the field
Check the pre snap alignment for a single high safety and press corners, if you see two safeties deep back out of this call since it is built for Cover 1 shells only
Use the line slant and stunt to your advantage by delaying your blitz timing call so the offensive line cannot identify the stunt pre snap
Hot route your underneath defenders into a shallow crash or spy if you are facing a mobile quarterback who likes to scramble against man pressure
Pair this with Cover 1 Hole or Cover 1 FS Fire in your play calling sequence so the offense cannot key on the same man coverage look every snap
