Breakdown

Fire Zone 2 out of the 5-2 Base is a zone blitz that sends extra pressure off the edges while dropping underneath defenders into passing lanes. The diagram shows both outside linebackers crashing off the edge, the defensive ends dropping into short zone coverage underneath, and the two deep safeties splitting the field in a two deep shell. This is a zone beater and pressure package designed to disguise where the extra rusher comes from, with the primary read being the quarterback's blind side edge since both alignments show a five man rush look with the ends replacing the blitzers in coverage.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check if the offense has a running back or extra blocker who can pick up the edge rush, since that indicates they anticipate a blitz. Watch the safety depth: if both safeties sit deep at 10 to 12 yards it confirms the two deep shell shown in the diagram and tells you the middle of the field is open underneath. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes toward the flat since the dropping defensive ends are sitting in those zones to jump quick outs and hot routes. This beats man concepts and slow developing play action because the underneath zone defenders can react instantly to shallow crossers. It is vulnerable to quick game and hitch routes thrown before the edge rush closes, and against max protect looks, the offense can pick up both rushers and eliminate the pressure advantage entirely.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to hold protection and expect man beater route combos rather than quick game. Disguise the blitz by showing a standard 5-2 look pre-snap and delay the walk up of your outside linebackers until just before the snap. Use the flat zone defenders (the dropping ends) to bait quarterbacks into throwing hot routes or check downs, then close on the ball with your user controlled defender. Pair this with Cover 2 or Cover 3 from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key on personnel or depth to identify the blitz. Avoid calling this against empty backfield or heavy shotgun spread sets since the extra rush lanes get exposed by quick slants and now screens.
