The Mike linebacker drops to a deep middle hole read, effectively acting as a third safety alongside the two deep halves defenders, while the corners and remaining linebackers sink into their zone drops underneath. This is not a blitz or man beater package, it is a pure zone shell designed to take away go routes and posts down the seams, and the primary read for the defense is to key the quarterback's eyes and get the Mike into his deep hole drop before jumping any underneath crossers.
Watch the release of the number two receiver, since if he stems vertically up the seam that is your Mike linebacker's key to sink deep into the hole immediately Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running four verticals or a seam and flat combo, both of which this call is designed to neutralize with the extra deep defender Post-snap, if the quarterback pumps toward the deep middle, trust your zone drop and stay patient rather than jumping the route too early and opening the corner flats This coverage is vulnerable to quick out and flat combinations low, so if you see a stick or flat concept build up front, be ready to squeeze the underneath with your linebackers Watch for offenses attacking the seams between the deep half safeties and the Mike's hole drop, since a well timed throw split between those zones is the traditional way to beat Tampa 2
