Boundary CB Blitz is a man pressure package out of the Under 4-2-5 Big Nickel look that sends the boundary cornerback off the edge as a fifth rusher while the defense rotates into a man scheme behind it. The remaining linebackers and secondary players lock up their assignments, with the free safety typically rotating over the top to help against verticals. This is a blitz beater killer designed to win on early downs or in obvious passing situations where the offense may not account for the extra rusher off the boundary, and the primary read is getting immediate eyes to the running back or tight end in the flat to that side since the blitzing corner vacates his zone/man leverage instantly.
Pre-snap, check if the boundary receiver is a single width receiver with no immediate help, which confirms the corner blitz has a clean lane off the edge. Watch for the running back checking protection to the boundary side, since that indicates the quarterback may already have a built-in answer to the blitz. Post-snap, get immediate depth with your deep safety since man coverage behind this blitz leaves you thin over the top against double moves and go routes. This play struggles against quick game to the field side and hot routes into the vacated boundary flat, so recognize when the offense spreads formation strength away from the blitz. Watch out for max protect looks or six-man protection schemes with extra blockers to the boundary, since this often means the blitz gets picked up and the coverage behind it is exposed for a big play.
Use this on early downs or third and medium when the offense has shown tendencies to run to the boundary or throw quick game to that side.
Check the offensive formation pre-snap for a running back or tight end aligned to the boundary, since that player becomes the hot read the instant the corner blitzes.
Disguise this by mixing it into a sequence with Cover 1 Hole and Cover 1 Slant Crash from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key the boundary corner walking down before the snap.
User the boundary cornerback yourself if you want full control of the blitz timing, especially against quarterbacks who audible quickly at the line.
Pair this with Cover 2 Invert or 2 Invert Hard Flat on the following snap to punish offenses that adjust protection expecting another corner blitz.
