Tampa 2 Show 3

Breakdown

Tampa 2 Show 3 is a disguised zone coverage out of the 3-4 Tite Grizzly, Base 5-2 personnel. Pre-snap it shows a three-deep shell to bait the quarterback into throwing deep outside, but at the snap it rotates into a two-deep shell with the middle linebacker sinking to wall off the deep middle, the classic Tampa 2 look. This is a zone defense built to beat vertical shot plays and deep in-cuts, with the primary read progression starting on the deep half safeties, then working down to the flat defenders and underneath linebackers to see if the offense is attacking the seams or the flats.

Defensive Reads

Read the deep middle safety at the snap, if he stays deep and the MLB sinks into the middle third, you have your Tampa 2 shell confirmed and can jump any deep crosser or post route. Watch the flat defenders on quick outs and speed motions, since the disguise depends on those defenders closing fast once the ball is snapped. This beats teams that key pre-snap shells and audible into deep outside throws expecting a true Cover 3 look, since the rotation caps those windows late. It is vulnerable to quick game and flood concepts to one side, since the flat defender to the flood side can get outleveraged before the safety rotation fully sets. Man beater route combos with option routes against the seam can exploit the hole between the MLB drop and the deep safeties if the MLB is slow to sink, so track his depth on the snap.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or second and long when you expect the offense to test a three-deep shell with a go route or deep out, since the late rotation to two-deep will jump those throws.

Pre-snap, hold your MLB or spy defender at the mesh point for an extra beat before dropping him deep to sell Cover 3 and freeze the quarterback's eyes.

Use the flat defenders to squeeze RB or TE flat routes since the disguise is most effective when the shallow zones close quickly after the show.

Pair this with Cover 3 and Cover 3 Drop in the same play call sequence so the pre-snap picture looks identical, forcing the offense to guess whether the deep middle is open or capped.

Avoid calling this against heavy no-huddle tempo teams that diagnose disguises quickly, since a slow MLB drop will get exposed by any offense that recognizes the late rotation.
