Cover 3 Drop out of the Tite Grizzly 3-4 Base 5-2 is a three deep, four under zone shell built to defend the entire field against balanced offensive sets. The three deep defenders (both corners and the deep safety) split the field into thirds while the four underneath defenders (two linebackers and two hook/curl defenders) drop into intermediate zones to take away shallow crossers, flats, and curl routes. This is a zone beater killer rather than a blitz package, so the primary read progression starts with the underneath flow: key the Mike and Sam linebacker drops first to diagnose if the offense is attacking the shallow zones, then work to the deep thirds to see if a vertical route is stressing a single deep defender in isolation.
Watch for offenses attacking the deep outside thirds with go routes or deep comebacks, since a single high safety help corner can get isolated if the flat defender bites on underneath action too early. Key the running back out of the backfield, if he releases into the void between your underneath zone and deep thirds that seam and flat combo route can pick apart the coverage without a user rallying to the catch point. This shell struggles against four verticals concepts that stretch all three deep defenders horizontally, so be ready to user the deep middle defender toward whichever vertical route threatens the seam. Look for post-snap sit routes at ten to twelve yards, since that is the classic soft spot between your underneath zone drops and deep thirds coverage. Beats basic curl flat combos and most man beater route concepts, but gets exposed by trips formations that overload one side and force your underneath defenders into conflict assignments.
Call this on early downs or second and medium when you expect balanced play calling since it defends run and pass equally well without committing extra defenders to the box.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is stacking receivers to one side or running bunch formations, since that can create natural picks against your underneath zone drops.
User the deep middle third defender in man press or spy the quarterback on rollout designs, this lets you close throwing lanes over the middle while your zone defenders hold their landmarks.
Mix this into a sequence with Cover 3 and Tampa 2 Show 3 from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key pre-snap shell recognition, since all three disguise similarly before the snap.
On third and long, pair this with Mike Blitz 0 as a change up call, forcing the offense to respect both the four man rush zone look and a potential all out pressure package from the identical formation.
