Defensive Reads
Watch for an unblocked edge defender or force player staying home instead of biting on the jet motion, that is the key to know if the sweep is defended. If the strong safety or a linebacker is flowing hard outside pre-snap to match the motion, expect the cutback lane to open behind the pulling linemen. User-controlled defenders sitting in the alley or crashing down early can blow this play up, so identify if a human is spying the edge before the snap. Overloaded fronts or run blitzes stacked to the play side strong-arm the sweep, look for extra defenders creeping into the box as a sign to bail into Power or Counter instead. Cornerbacks pressing at the line on the play side tend to get run off by the motion, creating an easier crack-back angle for the perimeter blocker.
Usage Tips
Snap the ball with your jet motion timed so the sweep hits the edge just as the pulling blockers arrive, avoid handing off too early or the defense flows before the seal is set.
Use this against defenses that are flowing hard to the box pre-snap, since Wildcat alignment often draws linebackers up expecting a dive or QB power look.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if both safeties are deep and cheating to pass shells, the edge numbers usually favor the sweep.
