Defensive Reads
Watch for an unblocked edge defender crashing hard down the line, that is the key defender the pulling blocker is designed to kick out. If the linebackers are stacked tight to the line pre-snap, expect fast flow and less room in the designated gap, so be ready to bounce outside. A safety creeping down into the box pre-snap signals run support and can shut down this play if he beats the puller to the point of attack. Post-snap, look for a user-controlled defender flowing hard downhill from the second level, since that is the biggest threat to blow up the pulling blocker's angle. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run fits favors this play, while a heavy blitz package or overload front to the play side neutralizes it.
Usage Tips
Run this out of Wildcat when you want to catch a base 4-3 or 4-2-5 defense not respecting the direct snap threat.
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense stacks eight in the box, consider bailing to Jet Sweep instead for a faster hit outside.
Use motion pre-snap to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety down, which tells you whether the alley is clogged.
Pair this with Counter in the same set to keep defenders guessing on which direction the pulling blocker attacks, since both plays start with similar backfield action.
Best called on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when you want a physical, downhill run that controls tempo and sets up explosive shots later.
