Quick Slants out of Weak I Pro (21 personnel) sends both outside receivers on hard slants working to the same side of the field while the backside receiver runs a slant into the middle from a tight alignment near the formation. This is a man beater built around quick separation, using the double slant to the right combined with a third slant from the left creating natural picks against man coverage and easy throwing lanes against zone drops. The primary read progression starts with the near slant off the quick three-step drop, then works to the far outside slant if the underneath defender jumps the shorter route.
Defensive Reads
Watch for corners playing outside shade pre-snap since that alignment invites the inside slant release and creates an automatic throwing window. Check linebacker depth before the snap because shallow linebackers can undercut the middle slant and jump the throw for a pick six opportunity. Post-snap, key on any user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or lurking underneath since that defender is designed to bait the quarterback into the slant and then jump the route. This concept struggles against aggressive Cover 2 zone with safeties bracketing the deep middle because the underneath defenders can squeeze the slant lanes and force a checkdown. Blitz packages that bring extra pressure off the edge can disrupt the timing of this play, so identify pre-snap blitz alignment and be ready to get the ball out even quicker or check to a hot route.
Usage Tips
Get the ball out on time within a three step drop since every route breaks quickly and defenders will close throwing windows fast.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with corners in press since the slants will win instantly against man due to the inside breaking angle.
Against zone shells, target the slant that sits in the passing lane behind the linebackers before the flat defenders can sink and cut the route.
Use hot routes to convert the backside slant into a quick out or spot route if you see a defender sitting directly on the inside breaking angle pre-snap.
Pair this play with PA Boot or PA Boot Lt in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the quick passing game and the play-action rollout threat off the same Weak I Pro look.
