HB Gut out of Weak I with 21 personnel is a downhill dive run that keeps the fullback and offside guard pulling through the gut of the formation to seal the point of attack. The diagram shows the halfback taking a tight track directly behind the fullback lead, hitting the hole between the guards before the linebackers can flow. This is a pure run play with no route combos shown, designed to punish light boxes and overly aggressive linebacker blitzes with a physical interior gap scheme. Primary read is the frontside A gap first, then bounce to the backside cutback lane if the initial hole is clogged.
Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow and reads the fullback he can plug the gut lane before the halfback gets there. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support in the box is when this play hits hardest since it isolates blockers against front seven defenders only. A stacked box with a safety creeping down inside eight yards signals run blitz recognition and should make you consider bailing to a pass concept from this set instead. Watch for user-controlled defenders spying the fullback lead blocker, since a smart user player will shoot the gut gap early and blow up the timing. Cover 1 or Cover 3 with aggressive linebackers flowing hard to the play side can string this out, so be ready to cut it back against the grain if you see fast pursuit.
Check the defensive box count before the snap, if there are six or fewer defenders in the box this play has a numbers advantage. Use motion or a hard count to see if linebackers creep toward the line, since that tells you whether they are keying run and will crash the gut lane. Pair this with PA Boot or PA Boot Lt off the same Weak I look so the play-action rollout threatens the exact same fullback fake and keeps linebackers honest. Stick to early down-and-distance situations like first and ten or second and short where defenses expect balance rather than obvious pass. If the defense shows a heavy blitz look pre-snap, consider hot routing out of it into Skinny Posts or Quick Slants to attack the vacated underneath zones instead.
