Punt Safe Man is a special teams punt formation built to protect against a return while assigning man to man coverage responsibilities on every eligible punt return threat. There is no route concept or offensive read progression here since this is a coverage unit call, not a passing play. The blocking scheme prioritizes protecting the punter first, with gunners and outside coverage men locking onto return men in man coverage as the punt is away, funneling the returner toward the middle of the field where help defenders wait.
As the return team, identify whether the punt team gunners are singled up or getting chipped at the snap, since man coverage assignments will follow the returner through his path regardless of zone landmarks. Watch for the outside gunners releasing immediately off the line, which signals the coverage unit is playing pure man technique rather than zone drop responsibilities. If you control a blocker on return, look to wall off the man defender early since he will trail the returner man to man instead of reading blocks in a zone shell. Punt Safe Man is vulnerable to return schemes that create natural picks or crossing patterns near midfield, since man defenders can get rubbed off blocks more easily than zone defenders passing off threats. This call shuts down speed returns to the sideline since the outside men are locked on with no help needed, but it can be exposed by an up the gut return if the interior protection gets beat.
Use Punt Safe Man when you need max protection on the punter and are worried about a fake punt or hard rush from the return team. Check the pre-snap alignment of the return team for stacked rushers on the edge, since man coverage gunners can get walled off if double teamed at the line. This call is best on situations where field position matters more than pinning deep, such as backed up in your own territory. Pair this with a normal Punt Safe formation earlier in the game to establish tendencies, then mix in Punt Safe Man on drives where you suspect the opponent is loading up return schemes based on personnel. Avoid this call if you need to pin the opponent deep and want more hang time focus, since the safe protection can slightly limit gunner release speed.
