Return Right is a punt return scheme out of the Punt Return 33 Even set that directs your return man to set up his return lane toward the right side of the field. The blocking scheme sends your wall-off blockers to seal defenders on the right hash, giving the returner a lane to cut upfield once he fields the punt. This is purely a special teams return play, not a pass or run concept from scrimmage, so the primary read progression starts with tracking the punt trajectory and hang time, then reading the first wave of coverage defenders as they close, and finally identifying the wall your blockers create on the right side to decide whether to cut it up inside or bounce it further outside.
Identify the punt team gunners pre-snap, if both gunners are locked into press alignment on the outside, the wall on the right may get beat off the release before it fully forms. Track the personal protector and any up-back defenders, since they are usually the first to disengage and shoot downfield in punt coverage, and they can crash the return lane early. Read the leverage of the first defender to break contain on the right side, if he stays disciplined in his lane rather than overrunning, your cutback window shrinks fast. Watch for a low, line-drive punt or a coffin corner attempt, both situations remove the return lane entirely and you should signal for a fair catch instead of forcing the return. Key on any user-controlled gunner sprinting downfield, since a skilled opponent will try to shed your wall blocker and disrupt the read before you reach full speed.
Take control of your return man immediately after the snap so you can manually navigate the lane once the wall forms on the right.
Watch the punt team alignment before the snap, if the punter overloads gunners to one side, that side often has a faster crack down the field, so weigh whether Return Right or Return Left better exploits the numbers.
Use manual sprint bursts through the wall instead of relying purely on the CPU pursuit angle, since user-controlled gunners can blow up the lane if you drift too far outside.
Mix in Return Middle and Return Left over a series so the punt team cannot key their gunners and personnel to one side, keeping your return lanes unpredictable.
Save this call for punts you expect to have shorter hang time or a rugby style angle, since a clean track to the ball with real blocking numbers matters more than trying to return a booming, high hang time kick.
