Bench Corner Stop out of Singleback Doubles Y-Slot Close is a five man route concept that attacks both sides of the field with a clear high low read. To the left, the outside receiver runs a bench (pivot out) route while the slot runs a stop route underneath, creating a natural rub against man coverage. To the right, the TE releases vertical then breaks into a deep corner route while the outside receiver runs a stop route flat to the sideline, giving the QB a corner over stop combo with the HB releasing on a check release blocking assignment. This is primarily a man beater thanks to the bench route pivot and the corner route stretching cornerbacks vertically, but it also holds up against zone if the QB reads the corner route against a hard flat defender. Primary progression starts with the TE corner route on the right, works down to the stop route underneath, then works over to the bench route side if the corner is capped.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment over the TE; a single high safety or a safety cheating toward the corner route side signals the defense is keying that route and you should look elsewhere. Watch cornerback press alignment on the outside receivers; hard press on the left indicates the bench route pivot will need extra separation, so be ready to climb the stop route underneath instead. Post-snap, key the flat defender to the right; if he sits and does not widen with the stop route, the throwing lane to the corner route stays open behind him. Look for a lurking linebacker or safety sinking into the throwing lane of the corner route, which is the classic zone defender key that shuts this play down and forces the checkdown to the bench or stop routes. Man coverage with no help over the top is the shell this play dominates, especially against man free or cover 1 without a deep robber, since the bench route rub and corner route both create clean separation windows.
Usage Tips
Use this play on second or third and medium when you need a defined half field read with a built in answer against both man and zone. Pre-snap, identify if the defense shows a two high shell; if the safety to the TE side rotates down, the corner route has a size or speed mismatch on a linebacker and should be your first read. If you see man coverage across the board, trust the bench route pivot on the left to create natural separation off the rub with the stop route underneath. Hot route the HB from a check release into a flat route if you diagnose a blitz, since he only has a check release assignment and can leak out for an easy outlet versus pressure. Pair this play with Four Verticals from the same set to keep the defense honest on deep shells, then come back to Bench Corner Stop to punish safeties who start creeping up after seeing verts. Use Switch X Comeback as a complementary call if the defense adjusts to taking away the corner route, since it attacks the same side with a different vertical stem.
