Breakdown

Mesh Spot out of Shotgun Wing HB Wk Close lines up two receivers running crossing mesh routes underneath, with the outside receiver breaking flat and the far side receiver running a corner route stacked on top of a shallow drag from the tight end. The HB releases from the backfield on a wheel/vertical route up the numbers while the inline TE runs a quick out to the flat, giving five distinct route levels against zone or man coverage. This is a classic man beater built around the mesh concept, with natural rub picks that free up receivers versus man coverage while also stretching zone defenders horizontally and vertically. The primary read progresses from the mesh crossers underneath, to the flat route as a checkdown, and finally to the corner and wheel routes if the defense sinks its underneath zone or blitzes.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety alignment pre-snap, since two deep safeties suggest Cover 2 or Cover 4 which allows the mesh crossers to work underneath with more room. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, because shallow linebackers who crash the mesh point can be beaten by the flat route or the delayed wheel route out of the backfield. Identify man coverage by tight corner alignment and safety rotation to one side, which signals this play should hit quickly on the mesh crossers before the defender can recover through the traffic. Key any user-controlled defender lurking near the mesh point, since a smart user will sit in the shallow zone to jump the crossing routes, so be ready to climb the ladder to the corner or wheel route instead. Cover 3 with a single high safety and aggressive underneath zone drops can be the toughest matchup for this play if the defense times the flat and mesh drops correctly, so look immediately to the corner route as a zone beater answer.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, check for man coverage indicators like corners lined up tight on receivers, since the mesh crossers create natural rubs that are tough for man defenders to fight through.

If you see Cover 3 or Cover 4 with deep zone drops, target the mesh crossers immediately before the underneath zone defenders can sink and wall off the throwing lanes.

Hot route the HB wheel route to a quick check-release block versus heavy blitz looks, since the wheel takes time to develop and can get the QB hit if protection breaks down.

Use this play on second and medium to third and medium situations where the mesh concept gives multiple layered options to move the chains.

Pair this with HB Base or Outside Zone earlier in a series to get defenders keying run, then hit them with Mesh Spot off similar formation for an explosive play-action feel even though this is a straight drop back pass.

Combine with Curl Combo or PA Cross from the same set to keep the defense guessing between man beaters and zone beaters out of an identical personnel look.
