HB Base is a downhill inside run out of the Shotgun Wing HB Wk Close set, using 12 personnel to stack extra blockers at the point of attack. The diagram shows the HB taking a direct dive path through the A gap behind the center and guard, with the offensive line executing a base blocking scheme to seal running lanes on both sides. This is a straightforward run play designed to attack a light box, with the primary read being a one cut decision: hit the initial A gap crease or bounce to the nearest open gap based on linebacker flow.
Defensive Reads
Watch for linebackers stacked directly over the guards pre-snap, that alignment signals a run blitz designed to beat this exact dive concept. If the defense shows a heavy box with safeties creeping down, this play loses value fast and you should audible to a play-action shot instead. Post-snap, identify whether the defensive tackles are shooting gaps (penetration) versus reading and reacting, since gap-shooting fronts blow this up before the back can get downhill. User-controlled defenders flying downhill from depth are the biggest threat, so if you see a linebacker or safety keying the mesh point instantly, this run has no room to develop. This play beats light boxes and passive fronts, but it gets stuffed against Cover 0 blitz packages and any front stacked with extra defenders in the tackle box.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box for the best odds of success.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at linebacker depth to confirm they are not stacked tight to the line expecting run.
Pair this play with Outside Zone and HB Counter U from the same set so defenses cannot key on a single gap or blocking scheme.
Mix in PA Cross or PA Y Over on early downs after establishing HB Base to punish linebackers who start creeping up in run support.
Best called on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when you have positive down and distance and want to stay ahead of the sticks.
