Duo out of Shotgun U Off Trips Flex is a power run play built to create vertical displacement at the point of attack using double team blocks up front. The diagram shows a double team on the play side combined with a lead blocker climbing to the second level, designed to seal off the front side gap and let the HB press the hole before bouncing off the double team. This is a downhill run play, not a man or zone beater, with the primary read being the play side double team: get skinny behind it, then read the lead blocker's kick out on the linebacker to decide whether to bounce outside or stick it up inside.
Key the play side double team block at the snap: if the defensive line stunts or crashes inside, the double team can get beat and the HB should look to bounce immediately. Watch the second level blocker's path to the linebacker; if he whiffs or the linebacker reads it fast and fills the alley, this play gets shut down quickly. Pre-snap, check safety depth and box count. Stacked boxes with eight defenders or safeties creeping down are the biggest red flag for Duo since it removes the extra blocker advantage. Post-snap, look for user-controlled defenders flowing hard downhill; aggressive user linebackers can blow this up if they diagnose the double team quickly, so patience and a hard cut against the grain punishes overpursuit. Man coverage on the backside receivers does not affect this run directly, but if the defense shows Cover 0 or heavy blitz looks, expect an unblocked defender in the box and be ready to check to a quick pass instead.
Run this behind a fullback or blocking TE lead if your personnel allows it, since Duo depends on that second level block clearing the alley defender.
Check the defensive front pre-snap: Duo hits best against even fronts and light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box.
Use motion or shifts from the Trips Flex bunch to identify if the defense is in man or zone, since a hard rotation to the trips side often signals zone and leaves the backside bubble open for a cutback.
Pair Duo with Inside Zone and Read Option from this same set so the defense cannot key on your run action, since all three plays start with similar mesh point action but attack different gaps.
Save Duo for early down situations, first or second and short to medium, where you want a controlled gain and want to keep the defense honest before dialing up Dagger H-Choice or Flood Y-Dig off similar formation tendencies.
