Breakdown
Dagger H-Choice runs the classic dagger combo out of the trips side, with the inner slot receiver sitting down on a deep dig at roughly 15 yards while the outside trips receiver clears vertically on a seam to stretch the deep zone defender or safety. The single receiver to the backside runs a choice route (option route) that reads coverage and breaks in, out, or sits based on the defender's leverage, giving you a built-in man beater against tight coverage. This is a straight dropback pass play with no play-action or RPO elements, and the primary read progression starts backside with the choice route against man leverage, then works to the deep dig once the seam clears out the middle zone defender.
Defensive Reads
Identify the safety alignment before the snap, since a single high safety in Cover 3 will struggle to cover both the seam and the dig, making this concept a strong Cover 3 beater. Watch for Cover 2 shells where both safeties sit deep, since the seam route is designed to run off the deep half defender and create a throwing window for the dig underneath. Key the flat defender on the trips side, since a user controlled linebacker or nickel corner sitting in the flat can jump the shallow route and disrupt the timing of the concept. Look for man coverage on the backside choice route, since aggressive press corners who jump the route too early can be beaten with an inside or outside break depending on leverage. Recognize disguised blitzes from depth, since a delayed zone blitz can bring an extra rusher through the choice route side before the receiver has time to option his break, collapsing the pocket before the dig comes open.
Usage Tips
Check the choice route first against man coverage since it reads leverage and settles into an easy completion versus press or off man alignment.
If the defense shows a two high shell pre-snap, key on whether the safety rotates down before the snap since the seam route is designed to occupy that defender and open the dig behind it.
Use hot routes to adjust the flat route on the trips side into a shallow cross or option if you are facing a heavy zone blitz look, since the base flat concept can get clogged versus five and six man pressure.
This play works best on second and long or third and medium since the dig sits at intermediate depth and the choice route needs room to break, so avoid calling it in short yardage situations where the sticks are inside five yards.
Pair this with Flood Y-Dig or Levels Y Sail from the same set to keep the defense guessing between deep dig combos and stretch concepts, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their drops.
