Breakdown

RPO Read Bubble lines up out of Shotgun Split Twins Offset with 21 personnel, showing an inside zone run to the backside while the outer receiver runs a bubble screen behind the line of scrimmage. The offensive line executes zone blocking steps, giving the quarterback a clean run/pass read based on the flat defender or slot defender's leverage. This is a true RPO: if the alley defender crashes down on the run fit, the QB pulls and throws the bubble, and if that defender sits or widens, the QB hands off into the zone run lane. Primary read progression is run first, then bubble key defender, then throw the bubble screen.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat or overhang defender immediately after the snap, since his crash or sit decision is exactly what the RPO is designed to exploit. Off-man coverage on the outside receiver with a squatting linebacker is a green light for the offense to hand the ball off into the zone run lane. Aggressive fire zone blitzes that send the slot defender upfield often leave the bubble wide open, so a disciplined defense needs that defender to stay patient. Teams using Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 with the flat defender reading run first tend to shut down the bubble portion, forcing the offense into the ground game. If the defense shows two-high safeties and the slot corner presses at the line, expect the offense to hand it off rather than test the bubble throw.

Usage Tips

Check the pre-snap alignment of the overhang defender or slot corner before the snap, since his depth tells you whether the box is light enough to hand off. Use this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay balanced and keep defenses honest against both run and pass. If the defense shows a hard blitz off the edge, pull the ball immediately and get the bubble out before the RPO key defender closes the throwing lane. Pair this with Triple Option Lt and Inside Zone Lt from the same set so defenses cannot sit on one specific run key or alley fit. Hot route the bubble receiver deeper on obvious passing downs if the defense is playing off coverage, since that adds YAC potential once he catches it in space.
