Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash hard on the run fake it confirms the crossing routes will have room to work underneath. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high often means man coverage on the twins verticals which favors the crossing action. Key on any user-controlled defender flowing toward the backfield fake, since that leaves the crossers uncovered in the intermediate zone. This play struggles against disciplined zone defenses that stay square and do not bite on the run action, particularly Tampa 2 or Cover 3 with linebackers holding their drops. Beware of interior blitzes that cross the formation quickly, since the HB and FB crossing paths can get disrupted before routes develop if the blitz timing beats the fake.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs when the defense has shown a tendency to bite on run action, since the crossing action off the buck fake is designed to freeze linebackers.
Check pre-snap for man coverage indicators like corners pressed on the twins receivers, since the crossers create natural rub situations that spring separation against man.
If you see two deep safeties (a shell indicating zone), hot route one of the vertical receivers into a comeback or sit route to give yourself an intermediate zone beater instead of forcing the deep ball.
Pair this call with Inside Zone Lt earlier in a drive to sell the same backfield action and set up defenders to overreact to the HB Cross Buck fake later in the series.
Use in second and medium or third and short situations where linebackers are more likely to step up on early run reads, opening the crossing lanes underneath.
