Breakdown

Mtn Slot Cross is a pass play out of Shotgun Split Twins Offset with 21 personnel that uses pre-snap motion to help identify man versus zone coverage. The diagram shows the outside receiver on the boundary motioning across the formation on a shallow drag path, while the inside receiver runs a deep vertical route that breaks outside near the top of the play, and the third receiver runs a corner route that stems upfield before breaking hard outside toward the sideline. The backfield shows a check release or protection look with the running back sliding to the flat away from the trips side, giving the quarterback a three level stretch (shallow drag, deep corner, and deep outside breaking route) that works as both a man beater off the motion and a zone beater with the crossing action stressing the middle of the field. Primary read progression starts with the crosser off the motion to see if a defender follows across the formation (confirming man coverage), then works to the deep corner route, and finally to the vertical breaking route as the deep shot if the safety bites underneath.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, key the cornerback aligned over the receiver who will go in motion, if that corner follows across the formation it signals man coverage and you should sit underneath the crosser with a user defender. Watch linebacker depth before the snap, shallow linebackers who spin out to carry the crosser show man match principles, while linebackers staying at depth suggest zone drops that will squeeze the deep corner route. Post-snap, the deep safety alignment tells you whether the vertical breaking route is a live threat, a single high safety rotating late can undercut the corner route if you jump the throw early with a user defender. This concept is vulnerable to a well timed nano blitz off the edge since the running back check release protection can be overloaded, bring extra pressure to the trips side to disrupt the quarterback before the crosser and corner route develop. Cover 3 zone drops with a flat defender sitting on the crosser and a deep third defender carrying the corner route can take away both primary reads, forcing the quarterback into the deep vertical breaking route as a low percentage throw.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion on the crosser to get a free coverage read before the snap, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation it confirms man coverage and you should target the crosser or the deep corner route depending on leverage.

Against zone shells, look to the deep corner route sitting in the hole between the flat defender and deep safety, this is your primary zone beater on this concept.

This play works best on second and medium to long or third and medium situations where the defense is more likely to sit in zone coverage or bring a delayed blitz, since the crosser needs time to develop.

Pair Mtn Slot Cross with Mtn X Spot or RPO Alert Swing in the same set to keep the defense honest, since those plays attack quick and underneath while Mtn Slot Cross takes shots downfield off similar formation and motion looks.

If you see aggressive man coverage on the outside receiver stemming vertically, hot route that receiver into a quicker breaking route to avoid a contested throw and lean on the crosser as your safety valve.
