Breakdown

WR Dbl Screen out of Empty Y Slot lines up with receivers on both the left and right side, with the left X running a quick screen release on the outside while the near slot receiver stays in to set up a wall block. On the right side the outside WR runs a shallow screen route back toward the sideline with the adjacent receiver blocking downfield, while the defender shown in red represents the primary edge threat that must be accounted for by the perimeter blockers. This is a true screen pass built to bait aggressive man coverage and edge blitzes, with the QB's primary read being the side that shows the fastest leverage and biggest blocking numbers, usually determined by which linebacker or corner bites hardest on the play fake.

Defensive Reads

Watch for corners playing off coverage or bailing into deep zones presnap, since that soft leverage lets blockers get in front of the screen before defenders can close. Man coverage with aggressive press corners is the ideal shell to attack here because their momentum upfield makes it hard to recover once the ball is thrown behind them. Zone coverages with linebackers sitting in short curl or hook zones can jump this play if they read screen quickly, so watch for a linebacker sinking and reading the QB's eyes instead of dropping deep. The red arrow defender represents an edge rusher or blitzer whose unblocked path can blow up the screen before it develops, so if the offense fails to account for a delayed blitz off that edge this play is vulnerable. User-controlled defenders who stay home and spy the backfield or ID screen action fast, especially at the second level, are the biggest threat to shutting this play down completely.

Usage Tips

Call this play when the defense has shown a heavy blitz tendency or aggressive man coverage on early downs, since the double screen gives you a built-in answer to pressure on either side. Presnap, scan for corners playing tight press or safeties rotating down into the box, both are green lights to throw the screen instead of checking into a hot route. Use the flick or hot route to lean the play toward whichever side has fewer defenders showing pressure, since this play lives and dies on numbers and angles rather than pure separation. Pair this call with Bubble Screen and WR Mid Screen earlier in a drive to condition the defense to jump screens, then come back to WR Dbl Screen once linebackers start sitting deeper to punish their overcorrection. Best used on first or second down in obvious run-blitz downs, or as a change of pace after a series of empty formation dropbacks to keep the defense honest against edge pressure.
