Shallow Cross out of Shotgun Empty Y Slot lines up with no backfield help, spreading five receivers across the formation to stress every level of the defense. The backside X runs a deep corner route while the shallow crosser sits underneath, dragging all the way across the field for an easy completion versus man coverage. Meanwhile the inside slot runs a deep drag over the middle and the outside receiver to the trips side runs a dig, with the far outside receiver working a corner route up the boundary. This is a man beater at its core, using the shallow drag to create natural rub picks against man defenders, though the deep in-cut and corner routes give it enough zone answers to stay viable versus zone shells. Primary read progression starts with the shallow crosser, works to the deep in route if the crosser is taken away, then climbs to the corner routes on the outside if the middle is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since two deep safeties signal Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells that flood the middle and make the shallow crosser tougher to exploit for big yardage. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, since linebackers who sink too deep in zone coverage open a throwing lane for the shallow crosser to settle in for an easy chunk gain. This play struggles against Cover 3 with a rat linebacker or lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone, since that spy can jump the crosser and bait the quarterback into a turnover. Man coverage with press corners and no help over the top is where this concept thrives, since the shallow drag naturally picks off trailing defenders and creates separation. Post-snap, track user-controlled defenders flowing toward the shallow crosser, since a smart human player will often abandon their zone assignment to jump the route, leaving the deep in-cut or corner routes wide open behind them.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to identify man versus zone before the snap since the shallow crosser and deep drag both benefit from natural traffic against man defenders.
If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with deep zone drops, hot route the crosser to sit down in the void for a quicker throw instead of dragging all the way across.
This play excels on third and medium to third and long because the shallow crosser and dig route combine to pick up eight to twelve yards even against a tight underneath zone.
Pair this play with Four Verticals or Flood Switch from the same set to keep the defense honest, since both concepts punish teams that key on the shallow crosser and sit their linebackers underneath.
Against aggressive man blitz packages, get the ball out fast to the shallow crosser since the route design naturally rubs off defenders and creates YAC opportunities before the pocket collapses.
