Play diagram for SFT Salem X-Swirl from Shotgun Empty Chips Tight in Madden 27

Breakdown

SFT Salem X-Swirl is a five-man route concept out of Shotgun Empty Chips Tight that uses a pre-snap motion to shift the formation before the snap. The X receiver runs a deep comeback breaking outside near the sideline, the outside receiver to the same side runs a swirl (a quick out and up double move) underneath, and the backside stacks a deep dig with an underneath drag from the slot, giving you a high low read on one side and a vertical shot on the other. There is no run action shown here, this is a straight dropback passing concept built to attack both man and zone coverage by stretching the field horizontally and vertically at the same time. The primary read starts with the swirl route underneath, then works to the comeback on the boundary, and comes back to the deep dig if the defense sinks its underneath defenders.

Defensive Reads

Check the cornerback alignment on the X receiver before the snap, tight press coverage tells you the comeback route is live and the swirl double move underneath is there to hold the flat defender. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sinks deep to cover the dig you have a wide throwing lane to the drag or swirl underneath. Cover 3 with a hard sink from the flat defenders is the toughest shell against this concept since it takes away both the swirl and the comeback at the same time, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the easiest shell to beat, the comeback route wins on the break and the swirl double move creates natural separation against trailing defenders. Look for a user controlled defender lurking near the drag or swirl route, that user threat is the biggest risk to this concept since both routes cross through the shallow middle of the field.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you have a leverage advantage on the swirl route immediately.

This concept works best on second and medium to second and long when defenses are still willing to play zone shells, since the comeback and dig combo punishes cornerbacks sitting off in cushion.

Hot route the drag into a deeper crosser against zone heavy defenses to give yourself an extra layer against Tampa 2 or Cover 3 sink drops.

Pair this call with Sft Salem Z-swirl in your play sequence so the defense has to respect swirl action breaking to either side of the field, keeping linebackers honest and preventing them from jumping the underneath routes.

Look to throw the comeback early on quick out and up double moves if the corner presses the X receiver, since the break back to the boundary is designed to counter aggressive man press technique.
