Power O out of the Power I Tight formation with 32 personnel is a gap scheme run play built to overload one side of the line with double lead blockers. The fullback and pulling guard lead through the hole, kicking out the edge defender or blowing up the first linebacker to show, while the offensive line blocks down to create a natural running lane. This is a pure run play with no play-action or pass option attached, and the primary read progression starts with the play side double team, then the FB lead block on the second level defender, and finally an alley cutback if the linebacker flow overruns the point of attack.
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are stacked tight behind the line expect an aggressive downhill blitz that can beat the double team before the FB gets to the hole. Identify whether the defense is running a 4-3 under or over front, since shifted fronts change which gap the pulling guard needs to attack and can clog the intended running lane. Key the play side defensive end, if he is crashing hard inside on the snap the RB should be coached to bounce it outside off the FB kick block. Look for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the hole (lurk technique) since this play is vulnerable to a defender who reads the pulling guard and shoots the gap before the fullback can seal him. This scheme beats base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts with light boxes, but heavy run blitzes and Bear fronts with extra defensive linemen crashing gaps can blow up the play before it develops.
Run this out of heavy personnel on early downs to keep defenses honest against 32 personnel base fronts. Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has six or more in the box against 32 personnel, consider hot routing the FB to check block or motioning for a numbers advantage instead. Use this on first and second and short to medium distance since the two lead blockers need room to develop and it loses value in obvious passing situations. Pair Power O with PA Power O in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect the same run action on early downs and later bite on the fake, opening up the pass game off identical formation and backfield action.
