PA Power O out of the Power I Tight formation sells the Power O run fake with the fullback and offensive line pulling before releasing into the pass concept, freezing linebackers and safeties who key run flow. This is a play-action shot play built to punish aggressive run fits, typically featuring a vertical seam or deep out from the tight end with a crossing route underneath to hold linebackers, plus a checkdown to the fullback or halfback leaking out of the backfield. The primary read starts with the safety rotation to determine if the deep shot is on, then works down to the intermediate crosser, and finally checks down to the backfield outlet if both are covered.
Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating down into the box, since a single high shell is far more vulnerable to the play action shot. Watch linebacker depth before the snap: linebackers creeping up to defend the run are the exact defenders this play is designed to freeze and beat over the top. Post-snap, key any user-controlled linebacker or safety who stays home and reads the quarterback's eyes instead of biting on the fake, since that defender can jump the crosser or deep route for a big hit or interception. This play struggles against Cover 4 or quarters shells with disciplined safeties who do not bite on play action, as well as against zone blitzes that get quick pressure before the fake even develops. Look for man coverage with linebackers matched on the tight end or fullback, since play action naturally creates leverage and separation against man defenders who have to read run first.
Run this play on early downs, ideally first or second and short to medium, when the defense expects Power O or HB Lead Dive based on prior play calls in this set. Mix this in after establishing HB Blast and Power O early in a drive so linebackers start creeping up and biting on the play fake. Check the safety depth pre-snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, hot route the crosser into a deeper dig to attack the void behind linebackers instead of forcing the vertical shot. Against Cover 3 or single high shells, take the deep shot immediately off play action since the fake often draws the underneath defenders out of position. If the defense shows blitz with stacked linebackers near the line, consider sliding protection or hot routing the fullback into a quick flat route as a hot read against pressure.
