HB Toss out of the Power I Tight formation with 32 personnel is a pure run play built to get the ball to the outside edge before the defense can flow to the ball. The fullback and offensive tackle lead the way with kick out blocks on the edge defender while the offensive line reach blocks to seal the interior, creating a bounce or bang lane for the halfback. This is not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, it is a numbers and gap scheme run designed to outflank fast flow defenses, and the primary read is the halfback keying the fullback's kickout block to decide whether to bounce it outside or cut it up inside the alley.
Watch for defenses that load the box with eight defenders or bring a strong safety down into the alley, this is the primary counter that shuts down HB Toss by outnumbering the blockers to the perimeter. Man coverage with aggressive corners pressing the line does not directly stop this run but often signals blitz packages behind it, so respect any pre-snap corner press as a cue for extra edge pressure. Zone shells with a cornerback sitting outside in a flat zone can read toss action quickly and force the run back inside, so if you see a corner spying the flat pre-snap expect him to be the first tackler. Post-snap, key the playside linebacker's pursuit angle, if he is flowing hard and fast to the sideline the halfback needs to cut this up inside before the alley closes. User-controlled defenders flying downhill on run action are the biggest threat to HB Toss, if the user takes the fullback's lead block head on the ball carrier has to make a defender miss in space or the play dies behind the line.
Call HB Toss when the defense shows a light box with six or fewer defenders inside the tackles, since the extra fullback lead blocker overwhelms most base fronts.
Check the strong safety and outside linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are crashing down hard on run flow you want to bounce this to the perimeter immediately rather than waiting on the cut.
Use HB Toss on early downs, first and second and short to medium yardage, to keep defenses honest before you go to PA Power O or PA FB Flat off the same look.
Mix in HB Lead Dive and HB Blast from this same personnel group so the defense cannot key toss action based on formation alone, this forces linebackers to respect the interior before you bounce it outside.
If you see a nano blitz or edge pressure package pre-snap, hot route the fullback to adjust his block angle or bail out of the play, since unblocked edge speed can blow this up before the pulling linemen get set.
