Breakdown
PA Comeback Flood runs a three level flood concept to the right off play-action from Pistol Full House Base 21 personnel. The outside receiver pushes vertical then snaps back to a comeback at the boundary, a middle route bends into a deep vertical seam up the numbers, and the underneath receiver runs a shallow drag flat route to occupy the low zone defender. On the backside a receiver runs a deep out breaking away from the formation, giving the quarterback a full flood read from deep to short on one half of the field. This is a play-action pass designed to punish Cover 3 and other zone shells by stressing the flat, curl, and deep third defenders simultaneously.
Defensive Reads
Read the pre-snap safety alignment first, a single high safety signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 and both are vulnerable to the flood concept Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow drops mean they respect the run fake and the deep seam route will be wide open behind them Track the flat defender's reaction to the shallow drag, if he sits the comeback route wins outside and if he jumps the comeback the drag is open underneath User the deep third defender on the play side since that is the only defender who can realistically cover both the comeback and the seam route simultaneously Cover 2 with two deep safeties can shut this down if the corner sinks under the comeback and the safety stays over the top of the seam, so look to attack the middle void instead Watch for a disguised blitz off the edge since play-action rollouts can be exposed to a fast contain rush before the routes fully develop
Usage Tips
Check pre-snap for a single high safety look before the snap since that tips Cover 3 or Cover 1 and this concept eats both alive
Sell the play fake by holding the play call until the run action fully develops so linebackers bite and open passing lanes underneath
Progression starts with the comeback route at the sideline since it wins fastest against Cover 3 corners sinking too deep
If the flat defender jumps the shallow drag, come back to the deep seam route sitting behind the linebackers for an explosive gain
Use this on early down and manageable distance to keep play-action honest, then pair it with PA Flood or Wing PA Cross out of the same set to keep defenders guessing on formation tendencies
Hot route the backside deep out into a quick hitch if you diagnose an aggressive blitz look pre-snap
