Side Blitz out of Nickel Load Dbl Mug is a five-man pressure package built off a Big Nickel 4-2-5 look with two mugged linebackers shown at the second level pre-snap. The diagram shows all five underneath defenders (three square icons and two circle icons) firing downhill off the snap with no zone drop responsibility, while four defenders (X icons) are deployed deep to handle coverage over the top. This is a straight man pressure blitz designed to overload one side of the formation and force a hot throw or beat single blocking with a numbers advantage, not a zone blitz or drop-eight look.
Defensive Reads
Watch for the offense sliding protection toward your overload side pre-snap, which signals they have identified the blitz and you should consider checking to a different play in the set. If the running back stays in max protect, expect one-on-one matchups on the perimeter, so trust your man coverage over the top. Post-snap, get eyes on the quarterback's first read since the hot route is usually a quick slant or flat route designed to beat the blitz before pressure arrives. This look is vulnerable to screens and RPOs since all underneath defenders are crashing downhill with no zone eyes, so a slow-developing screen can gash it. Against empty formations or spread sets, be ready to bail into man coverage if you sense the offense is baiting the blitz with a hot slant concept.
Usage Tips
Bring this on passing downs where the offense has shown blitz-beater protection issues, especially 3rd and medium to long.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense has a running back or tight end staying in to chip block, since that determines which gap the extra rusher wins through.
Use the mugged linebacker alignment to disguise which side the overload comes from, then confirm your blitz side just before the snap to keep the offense guessing.
User the most dangerous free rusher off the edge to contain scrambling quarterbacks and spy mobile QBs if the blitz does not get home immediately.
