Cover 1 LB Blitz brings a five man pressure package off Big Nickel personnel while playing man coverage behind it. The diagram shows all five underneath defenders (three square icons, two circles) crashing downhill off the snap on blitz paths, while the deep safety rotates into a single high shell to cap the middle of the field. This is a pressure defense, not a man beater or zone beater for the offense, it is designed to disrupt timing routes and force a quick decision by overloading gaps before the quarterback can climb the pocket.
Defensive Reads
Watch for the offense sliding protection toward the strength of your blitz, that tells you they identified the mug look and are cheating the point of attack. If the running back stays home to chip or block, you likely have a numbers advantage on the edge rush, key that lineman assignment right at the snap. Man coverage on the outside is vulnerable to quick out breaking routes and pick concepts, so if you see stack or bunch alignments pre snap, be ready to bail your user rush and drop into a shallow zone if the quick game hits. Watch the single high safety leverage before the snap, if he cheats to one side the offense can exploit the opposite deep third with a vertical shot before the pressure arrives. This blitz gets neutralized by max protect schemes and quick game RPOs, if you see six or seven blockers stay in, consider audibling to a coverage heavy call instead.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or third and medium when you want to dictate tempo and force the offense into a hurried throw. Pre snap, identify empty backfield or trips looks since those formations often leave fewer blockers to pick up the extra rushers. Motion check the running back or slot receiver to confirm true man coverage before the snap, if the defense does not adjust you have a clean single high read. User the closest lurking linebacker to jump underneath crossers since the single high safety cannot help on every vertical shot. Pair this with Cover 3 Match or Tampa 2 from the same set so your pre snap disguise looks identical and quarterbacks cannot key the blitz from alignment alone.
