Spot out of the Near Close Flex 21 personnel set shows the classic Spot concept: the outside receiver runs a corner route from the flexed slot, the inside receiver at the line sits on a quick spot/hitch, and both backs release out of the backfield on wheel routes up the sidelines. This is a Cover 3 beater by design, using the corner route to attack the deep third while the spot route sits in the hole vacated underneath, and the two wheels stretch the flat defenders and seams for man coverage busts. Primary progression starts with the corner route against the deep third defender, works down to the spot sitting underneath, then checks both wheel routes if the corner rotates late or a linebacker gets caught in man.
Defensive Reads
Key the deep third safety and corner alignment before the snap, if they are showing soft outside leverage the corner route will have room to work. Watch the flat defenders post snap, if they widen with the wheel routes it opens a throwing lane for the spot route sitting underneath. Identify if the defense is in man coverage by checking linebacker depth and alignment on the backs, tight man coverage on the running backs signals vulnerability to the wheel routes. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender and no deep half help is the shell that gets exploited hardest by this concept. Press man with a deep single high safety and disciplined linebackers who stay square on the backs can shut down both the wheel routes and the underneath spot, forcing a tough throw into the corner route window.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a defender count to confirm Cover 3 before the snap since this play is built to punish that shell.
If you diagnose zone, throw the corner route with anticipation before the deep third defender can fully rotate over the top.
Against man coverage, work the wheel routes out of the backfield since linebackers and even some safeties struggle to stay in phase on the vertical break.
Pair this call with Curl Flat or Mtn Stick from the same set so you can run similar backfield action and route stems while attacking different levels of the same coverage look.
Best called on third and medium or in two minute situations where the defense is likely to sit in zone shells and give up the spot and corner combo underneath and over the top.
