HB Angle out of the Near Close Flex 21 personnel package sends the halfback on the signature angle route out of the backfield, releasing to the flat before breaking upfield against overpursuing linebackers, which is the primary read on this concept. The two outside receivers stretch the field vertically on go routes while the inline tight end runs a deep out breaking to the boundary, occupying the deep zones and pulling coverage away from the underneath area. This is a classic man beater designed to isolate the HB on a linebacker in space, though the vertical routes from the outside receivers also stress zone defenses by clearing out the intermediate levels.
Pre-snap, identify whether a linebacker or a safety is aligned over the HB, since a linebacker matchup is the green light for the angle route to work. Watch for Cover 1 or Cover 3 man match shells, as this play exploits linebackers who cannot change direction fast enough on the HB's angle break. Post-snap, key on whether the defender covering the HB overruns the flat release, which opens the window for the sudden upfield cut. Look for a user controlled defender flying downhill on the flat route before the break, since that aggressive jump gets beaten badly by the angle concept. Zone heavy shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with disciplined linebacker drops can shut this down if the underneath defenders stay patient and do not overcommit to the flat.
Use this play on early downs or third and short when you expect man coverage with a linebacker matched on the HB. Check pre-snap for a single high safety shell or Cover 1 look, since the angle route is deadly against man defenders who cannot mirror the HB's out and up break. If the defense shows blitz, the HB angle route doubles as a natural check down and safety valve against pressure. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick slant or drag if you see a corner sitting in soft zone underneath. Pair this play with FB Dive and HB Inside from the same set to keep defenses honest against the run before hitting them with the angle route out of a similar formation look. Sequence this after Curl Flat or Shallow Cross to condition linebackers to sit on shallow crossers, then hit the angle route when they bite on the underneath traffic.
