Return Left Lead

Kick Return·Nfl Kick Return·Personnel not specified

Breakdown

Return Left Lead is a kickoff return play built to funnel the return man toward the left sideline behind a wall of lead blockers. The blocking scheme stacks blockers in a staggered wedge that peels off to the left hash, sealing off the first wave of coverage defenders so the returner can cut upfield off the numbers. This is a return-specific play, not a route concept, so the primary read progression is patience through the first level of blockers, then a decisive plant off the last wedge blocker before turning it vertical.

Defensive Reads

Watch the kicking team's outside coverage men on the left side pre-snap, if they are stacked heavier there this lane gets clogged fast. Identify lane runners who are crashing hard downfield versus contain defenders staying disciplined in their lanes, hard crashers open cutback lanes for the returner. Look for a user-controlled defender flying down the left sideline early, that is the most common way this return gets shut down before the wall forms. Post-snap, key on whether the coverage unit collapses inside out or outside in, inside out pursuit is what this play is designed to beat. If the return man sees a free hat unblocked near the left hash by the time he crosses the 15, he should cut it back immediately rather than trying to outrun the angle.

Usage Tips

Call this when the kicking team lines up with a heavier right-side coverage lean, since Return Left Lead exploits lanes on the opposite hash.

Take the catch a few yards deep in the end zone if the kick has hang time, this gives your blockers time to set the wall before you commit to the left lane.

Use manual control on your returner only after the first level of blockers engages, jukes too early kill the blocking angles.

Mix this with Return Right Lead and Return Middle Match Up from the same set so opposing coverage units cannot key on a single lane pre-snap.

On shorter kicks or squib situations, avoid this call since the wedge blockers will not have time to form the wall before contact.
