Y Fost out of Pro Far (21 personnel) is a play-action flood concept built to attack one side of the field with a full route pyramid. Off the play-action fake, the fullback releases on a wheel route out of the backfield working from underneath to the sideline, the TE runs a deep post through the middle, one receiver runs a deep go up the numbers, another cuts an out route in front of the wheel, and the backside receiver runs a curl back to the quarterback while the far receiver clears out on a deep go. This is a Cover 3 and Cover 2 beater that stresses zone defenders vertically and horizontally, with the primary read progression starting on the flood side out and wheel combo before working back to the post and backside curl.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two high safeties or a single high safety, this tells you whether the corner or post route is the priority throw. Watch the flat and curl defenders after the snap, if they widen with the out route the wheel route from the fullback will be wide open down the sideline. Beware of Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with deep quarter defenders sitting on the post and go routes, these coverages can take away the deep shots and force you into the underneath curl or out. Key on blitzing linebackers, if the defense brings a nano blitz or edge pressure the play-action fake can freeze the defense just long enough to hit the quick out or curl before the pocket collapses. Look for user-controlled defenders lurking in the shallow flood zone, a rover or spy sitting underneath can jump the out route or wheel, so be ready to progress to the backside curl or post instead.
Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment before the snap, two deep safeties tilted to the flood side signal Cover 2 and the corner route or post will have room to work behind the flat defender.
If you see a single high safety, trust the post from the TE since Cover 3 defenders often widen with the flood and leave the middle of the field open.
Use the out and wheel combo on the play side to isolate a linebacker or nickel defender in man coverage, the wheel route is a strong man beater against slower second level defenders.
Run this on second and medium to second and long situations where defenses expect a quick game or draw, the play-action fake will hold linebackers just long enough to open the post and wheel windows.
Pair Y Fost with HB Dive or FB Dive Weak earlier in a series to sell the run fake, then call this play once the defense starts creeping linebackers toward the line of scrimmage.
