The Jets are in a difficult but improving cap situation. Right now they carry $95.2M in dead money, the fourth-highest total in the league, which eats into what would otherwise be a healthy $34.5M in available cap room (rank 8). That dead money burden is the central challenge of the near term, as it limits the Jets' ability to make aggressive upgrades despite nominally respectable room. The good news is that relief is clearly coming: committed spending drops from $228.6M next season to $151.8M in two seasons and $92.2M in three, and next year's projected cap room balloons to $101.0M (rank 5 of 32). The team also carries $13.6M in rollover (rank 12), adding a modest buffer. With 34 expiring contracts on the roster, the Jets will have enormous flexibility to reshape the roster in seasons two and three of a franchise rebuild, provided they are disciplined about avoiding new dead-money traps in the interim. The path is there; the patience is required.
