Detroit is tight right now, with cap room of $1612.9M ranking 27th in the league and $30.5M in dead money sitting at 16th for most dead money carried. The $19.2M rollover figure, ranking sixth leaguewide, provides a modest buffer that can be applied strategically this season. The committed cap schedule tells a better story going forward: this season's $286.8M commitment drops to $250.9M next year and $278.5M the year after, before falling sharply to $186.6M three seasons out. That late-window drop is where the franchise gains genuine flexibility to reset or extend key pieces. In the near term, the cheapest roster relief comes from the cut candidates with little or no dead money, Joshua Dobbs at $1.4M freed with $0 dead and Tom Kennedy at $1.1M freed with $0 dead being the clearest examples, while the Larry Borom situation at $2.4M freed against $2.6M dead is better addressed post-June 1 to avoid an in-season cap hit. Overall the Lions are in a manageable position for a contending team, with a clear pathway to meaningful cap flexibility within two to three seasons.
