The primary read starts with the shallow mesh combination working from the play side across the formation, then progresses to the intermediate dig or over route if the underneath defenders squat, with the backs as the checkdown valve versus a hard blitz.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with press corners and a single high safety, since that alignment is where the mesh crossers create the most natural separation. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, a shallow drop from the mike or will linebacker signals a robber or lurk technique designed to jump the shallow crossing routes. Post-snap, key the safety rotation, if both safeties stay deep in a two high shell it usually means Cover 2 or Cover 4, which allows the underneath crossers to sit in soft zones for an easy completion. Recognize blitz packages by counting box defenders before the snap, if the defense sends extra rushers the backs need to check release and help in protection rather than releasing immediately into their routes. Be wary of user controlled defenders spying the shallow crossing lanes, since a smart user lurk can jump the mesh route and turn it into a pick six if the quarterback stares it down too long.
Attack man coverage first since the crossing routes create natural picks that separate defenders from their assignments, especially against Cover 1 or Cover 0 looks with no deep help over the top.
Check the middle linebacker depth pre-snap, if he is sitting shallow in a hook zone he can undercut the mesh crossers, so consider hot routing one receiver on a deeper crossing angle to clear that zone.
Use this on third and medium to third and long since the mesh concept takes a few seconds to develop and needs room underneath for the receivers to separate after the rub.
Pair this with FB Belly or HB Slip Screen earlier in a series to get linebackers flowing downhill, which opens up the shallow crossers with more room to run after the catch.
Against zone shells like Cover 3, look to sit the crossing routes down in the soft spots between zones rather than expecting a full separation route, and use the backs out of the backfield as an outlet if the read is muddy.
