Breakdown

FB Belly out of Split Backs Pro Slot is a run play designed to attack the inside gaps behind a lead-blocking fullback, following the guard and fullback combo through the hole. The offensive line shows down blocks and a slight zone-flow action to seal the frontside, while the fullback leads through the hole to pick up the first defender that shows. The primary read is the fullback lead block: identify which linebacker or defensive end he engages, then follow the running back off his hip through the natural cutback lane.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth before the snap, stacked backers within four yards of the line signal a run blitz that can beat this play to the hole before the fullback gets a clean track. Identify the defensive front, an odd front with a nose tackle head up on center clogs the primary lane and forces an early bounce read. Against man coverage looks with safeties rotated into the box, this play struggles because extra run defenders fill gaps faster than the blocks develop. Zone shells with light boxes, especially Cover 3 or Cover 4 with only five in the box, are where FB Belly hits hardest since the fullback gets a clean angle on the first level defender. Post-snap, track whether the user-controlled defender crashes down on the fullback lead block or sits and reads, a crashing defender opens the cutback lane while a patient one forces you to trust the blocking scheme longer.

Usage Tips

Run FB Belly early in drives to establish inside run tendencies before you dial up PA Slide off the same look to punish overaggressive linebackers.

Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has six or fewer in the box, this is a green light run against base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts.

Use the fullback as a pre-snap indicator, if defenders key hard on his release the moment the ball is snapped, expect quick flow and be ready to bounce the run outside.

Best called on second and short or first and ten, since the downhill design punishes teams that sit back in soft zone shells waiting for pass reads.

Pair with HB Slip Screen and Curl Combo in the same set to keep linebackers honest, since both plays start with similar backfield action before branching into pass concepts.
